What is the proper way to spell SANTA CLAUS or SANTA CLAUSE?

I have always seen it spelled with an e on the end. I don't know if that's the proper way to spell it but in movies and such it's spelled like that. I have seen on the history channel whenever they do the special that there is not an e on the end. So I think either way of spelling it is right. Disney adds an e and the history channel takes it off because it's the traditional way of spelling it.
